On April 13, 2023, the Slovene National Theatre Maribor premiered the play How I Learned to Drive on its Small Stage, directed by Nejc Gazvoda. Paula Vogel’s Pulitzer Prize-winning script delicately explores the complexities of family relationships, illusions, and trauma with remarkable sensitivity and narrative finesse, focusing on the central relationship between Li’l Bit and her uncle Peck. This production navigates themes of emotional and sexual abuse with subtlety, avoiding moralization while addressing these issues with depth and nuance.
I had the honor of composing the music for this emotionally charged production. Collaborating with the director and the creative team, I sought to create a musical landscape that enhances the play’s powerful storytelling. The production also features stellar performances by Julija Klavžar, Kristijan Ostanek, and Maša Žilavec, further elevating this unforgettable theatrical experience.
