Born into a family where jazz records were played by his father — a classical trumpet player — Igor grew to become a prolific jazz trumpeter, composer, and educator.
He completed his Masters degree at the University of Graz, Austria in 2009. Traveling through Europe and America — particularly New York — he studied with celebrated players including Stjepko Gut, John Swana, Charles Toliver, and Dave Rodgers.
As a session musician, Igor has recorded over 30 albums across a range of genres. He was a regular member of the European Movement Jazz Orchestra, releasing on the Clean Feed™ label in 2011. His recordings have taken him from Cairo to Beijing, Brussels to Casablanca.
Igor has composed music for over 700 episodes of daily television series — among them some of Slovenia's most beloved and widely watched programmes. He also composes for theatre and film, and holds the position of Assistant Professor of Jazz Trumpet at the Academy of Music, University of Ljubljana.
Selected Festivals & Venues
Pocket.Star departs somewhat from traditional jazz compared to Igor Matković's previous projects, yet it retains improvisation as the key building block of mutual communication and musical creation.
This record is one of the most mature and significant works in the history of Slovenian jazz today. It simply is, it exists — as an intimate experience of a person who accepts transience and, by sharing his insights with those willing to listen, becomes universal.
The central performer conveys a sense of complete presence in the moment itself — living and reliving every tone, striving not so much toward the development of musicality as toward the discovery of sound itself.
